On the August 30 Talk at the Table, we take a tour of the new Theatre 101, Virginia Tech's new free standing theatre venue at the intersection of Draper and College. We hear from Randy Ward, Department of Theatre and Cinema faculty member who has been heavily involved as a consultant on the project. He is joined by Patty Raun, Chair of the Department of Theatre and Cinema; and, Bob Leonard, Department of Theatre and Cinema faculty member. It's a great show.

The September 20 show will focus on Floyd County where folks are gathering to see how they can build on the county's rich heritage of self-sufficiency and close relationship to the land. The show will feature Haden Polseno (bottom) and colleagues who are working together, planning, and developing projects to strengthen the Floyd community. They met recently (below) to advance their work together. Stay tuned!

Host Andy Morikawa and guests Gerry Moles, Bruce Hull, Britt Boucher and Harry Groot talk about sustainable development with a view to forestry and the environment.

Questions the group considered:

1. What is the role of forests in maintaining quality environmental services (clean water, healthy landscapes, etc.) and quality community life (recreation, beauty, inspiration, etc.)?

2. How do we benefit from the products we draw from forests and maintain these very same services and opportunities?

3. What is the current state of the forests in our region?

4. What are the negative influences of the quality of our forests?

5. In order to have sustainable forest management, what must we do differently from the present?

6. There is a current emphasis on local foods, is there a parallel interest in local forest products?

7. In addition to lumber, what other products can our forests supply on a sustainable basis?

8. What are the barriers to a sustainable forestland economy?

9. How can people living in our area get involved in seeing to it that our forests remain intact and healthy?
